September 1, 2021 – An Announcement

I am announcing my intention to withdraw from the Ward 8 City Council race in the 2021 Calgary election. I entered the election committed to serving the people of Ward 8 and Calgary, and wanting to ensure they had an authentic, community-focussed, progressive option at the polls.

Since that time, other credible, progressive candidates have also thrown their hats in the ring, joining a field that has swollen to nine contenders. I have come to know these other candidates and, given the similarity of our platforms, I have realized the best way for me to serve my community in this election is to narrow the field to prevent the potential of vote splitting in the ward.

I hope all candidates, regardless of political stripe, can find the courage to tackle complex issues such as harm reduction, development policy (including density bonusing), and the downtown tax shift with nuance and open-mindedness.

To my supporters and volunteers, I thank you for your tremendous support and dedication, and I apologize for any disappointment this decision may cause. The failures of our campaign are mine alone; our successes were all you! You are, one and all, talented and passionate community advocates, and properly supported I believe there is nothing you could not accomplish.

To my donors, I thank you for your faith in me, and I commit to refunding as much of your donated funds as possible (less campaign expenditures to date) so that you can direct them to the candidate of your choice.

To all those who nominated me to run for your council seat, your belief in me means so much, and is a reflection of our shared values of community, authenticity, and kindness.

To Calgary’s voters, I encourage you to look beyond the photo-ops, aspirational videos, and campaign fanfare to instead assess the integrity, authenticity, and values of candidates. The skills required to campaign effectively are not those required to govern wisely – don’t vote for the best campaigner, vote for the best person.

I pledge to continue serving my community as I have always done, and I encourage everyone to find their own paths to do the same – there are so many ways to make a difference. I wish you all health, happiness, and the brightest of futures. Onward!

Ted Knudtson

Progress Now for a Better Tomorrow

Calgary is facing a challenging time, and who we choose to guide us through it will determine whether we languish in a vain attempt to relive past glory or take the opportunity to move forward into a bold new era for our city.

I am a progressive community advocate who believes we need to stride boldly into the future, facing challenges head on. I believe we can build a prosperous, inclusive city of the future that attracts industry, talent, and investment.

We need to take bold action to grow our economy, to ensure opportunity for all, to face head on our divisions and so mend them, to fight climate change, to end homelessness, to combat the opioid crisis, and to take our seat at the table of world class cities. We are a city of leaders, and now is our time to shine.

This election is about you. As the campaign progresses, I look forward to hearing from Calgarians and discussing ideas that will build upon our shared values and many strengths to create a prosperous future for Ward 8 and all Calgarians.

Are you ready for the challenge?
